Already I can see that I'm not going to be as good at updating my blog as I had hoped, but I guess I'll just keep trying. After being flat on my back for 6 days I am thrilled to be up and, best of all, fever free. I started getting a little cough last Tuesday after my first "New Grad" class at the hospital, and thought it was probably just allergies... (on a side note, the first class was okay, we went over what kind of trash cans you should use for what kinds of trash- and there are like 9 different trash cans. also we shared about where we are from and why we are nurses, and then we meditated. we also got a homework assignment. hooray! ha.) wednesday I was going to make another blog post but then I just wasn't feeling like it. I tried all day to fight off getting sick- I drank about 9 cups of "breathe deep" tea and took emergen-C and airborne, along with resting and trying to think positive. However the bodyaches started about halfway through the day, and by wednesday morning I knew I was sick. My sx (symptoms for those of you not used to my abbreviating) were: possible fever (hadn't taken my temp), very achey joints, headache and a dry cough. I went to the express clinic to get tested for influenza, since my brain was screaming that even if I tried to deny it, that's what I had. I had a very frustrating experience at the express clinic, made even worse by the fact that I felt so bad and was on a very short fuse. The NP (and I normally LOVE nurse practitioners!) was dreadful, and didn't even come in to the room to ask my my sx- just sent in a tech to swab me for strep, even when I didn't have a sore throat! He barged in and stuck the swab in my face without explanation, and when I told him I don't get strep he just said they had to test me anyway. Whatever. Then the NP came in, didn't talk to me about what was going on, just about my hair color and what the weather was like, and assessed me. She then left and came back saying I was getting a breathing tx, a z-pack, and some phenergan DM (as much as I love phenergan, I didn't even know they gave it for coughs). These are all treatments for bronchitis or something like it, which I definitely didn't have, but that's okay, because this NP never even told me what she thought I had! After I got the breathing tx my heart was beating at about 150 and I was shaking like crazy. They handed me a sheet of paper about bronchitis and sent me on my way. Awsome. NOT the way I like to be treated, and after I got worse over the next three days, my fever and cough remained and the aches and chills did not get better, I decided this was definitely the flu and that woman is and idiot. I took my antibiotic just in case, but it obviously didn't help at all... liquid phenergan does still make me sleep like a baby though :) yum!
Anyway, after all of that I still only missed one day (Saturday) of work, which I think is pretty amazing. Nursing is one of the few jobs where you can be out of commission for 6 days and not have to take a whole week off of work- I'm lucky! Oh and speaking of work, I got my first Big Girl Paycheck- HOLLLLLA!!!!!
Anyway, back to work tomorrow it is, luckily for only an 8 hour day because then I have my 4 hour class after. Hoping to be back on my own floor, but being floated really isn't so bad because at least I have my preceptor. I work tomorrow, thurs and fri then Debbie and I are heading off to Thousand Oaks for the weekend to see mom- Yay!!
Hope you guys are well, and that you steer clear of the flu- GET YOUR SHOTS (yes I feel strongly about this- ask me why sometime)!
m.
